In 2004, Aman was the first international hotel brand to open in Bhutan, with five lodges across the country. The properties, which are known in their entirety as Amankora, make up an appealing circuit for visits to Bhutan that can range from one to two weeks. Architect Kerry Hill designed the lodges with tastefully monastic bedrooms and minimalist spaces in nature. In their various locations, however, each has a different style and setting. Located about 45 minutes from Paro town, this is the Amankora lodge where guests typically stay at the end of their journey. The lodge, which is bigger than the other Amankoras, has 24 suites in separate buildings nestled along a rushing river with streams circumventing the property. The sound of rushing water, the cover of fir trees and the mountains in the distance make this lodge special. Bhutan’s most famous temple built on the edge of a cliff, the Tiger’s Nest, is nearby—and the two-hour hike up makes for an ideal final day on an Amankora journey.
