At a Glance

In 2004, Aman was the first international hotel brand to open in Bhutan, with five lodges across the country. The properties, which are known in their entirety as Amankora, make up an appealing circuit for visits to Bhutan that can range from one to two weeks. Architect Kerry Hill designed the lodges with tastefully monastic bedrooms and minimalist spaces in nature. In their various locations, however, each has a different style and setting. Amankora Thimphu, located in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the capital city, is a zen-like property that resembles a whitewashed dzong (fortress), and makes an ideal first stop on a Bhutan expedition. Indagare can help match the combination of lodges that might be right for you on a journey through Bhutan.

Indagare Loves

  • Hiking to the nearby Pangri Zampa, a 16th-century building now home to a monastic astrologer training school
  • Evening cocktails around the fire under wool blankets, while local dancers in traditional garb perform ceremonial dances that go back centuries
  • Strolling the streets of Thimphu, where evidence from international influence is evident in the Korean pop star-inspired hair styles of Thimphu’s hip teenage set

Review

Nestled in a blue pine forest in the hills overlooking Bhutan’s capital of Thimphu, this is often the first stop on a visitor’s journey through the Amankora circuit. The lodge has 16 suites off a sunny courtyard and a deck where meals are taken in the summer and fires roar at night. The living and dining spaces have soaring ceilings, as well as the Amankora’s signature wood-paneled walls and cozy fireplace. Spacious suites are designed in Aman’s minimalist style with Bhutanese-style windows framing the sumptuous views, blonde wood-paneled walls, soaring ceilings, a freestanding deep soaking tub, and a traditional wood-burning bukhari to keep guests cozy on chilly night. There is also a small spa for revitalizing treatments. The service here is impeccable—the attention to detail is flawless and the staff really does their best to provide guests with a memorable journey.

Who Should Stay

Thimphu is a gateway to further regions of Bhutan, and often a necessary stop. Because of the serene vibe of the property, Amankora Thimpu is best suited for couples, groups of friends or families with older children.
