At a Glance

About the size of Switzerland, the landlocked Kingdom of Bhutan at the foot of the Himalayas was founded by a Buddhist master in the 17th century. Referred to by its own people as the Land of the Thunder Dragon, it is a country of staggering beauty, replete with rice paddies, rushing streams, forest trails and fields of wildflowers. As a Buddhist Kingdom that has followed its own way of life for centuries, Bhutan attracts many who come seeking enlightenment and healing and to learn meditation. Spirituality, wellness and serenity are also center stage at the Six Senses, a circuit of lodges across the country—from the capital of Thimphu to the remote Bumthang Valley. Each has its own unique style and sense of place, but all share a commitment to their local communities and to creating immersive cultural experiences for their guests. Indagare can help assess the combination that would work for you. With impressive mountain views, cozy minimalist suites and an expansive spa, Six Senses Thimphu lodge is an idyllic place to acclimatize and explore the capital city.

Review

Thimphu is often the first stop in Bhutan and Six Senses Thimphu rises to the occasion as a perfect jumping-off point. The first look at the lobby’s panoramic mountain view is known to elicit gasps; with its 8,695-foot elevation and strategically placed windows, the lodge is called the “Palace in the Sky.” When the clouds are mirrored in the reflecting pools below, it truly does seem to be floating. Located 20 minutes above Thimphu town and perched on a hill with sweeping valley views, the Six Senses brings tranquility and a spa-focused oasis to Bhutanese city life.

The views continue from the main building to the 20 spacious suites, from the bedroom, living room and bathtub, for good measure. Interiors are minimalist but cozy, with rich woods, fluffy knit carpets and wood-burning stoves that are lit while guests are at dinner in the evenings. Each suite has a spacious furnished terrace where breakfast can be served in the warmer months. For even more space, the one- to three-bedroom villas come with a personal spa and terrace.

A notable element of the Six Senses’ Thimphu lodge is their glorious spa- the largest of all the Six Senses properties’. Spa and wellness facilities here include hot stone baths, sauna and steam rooms, a serene, floor-to-ceiling glass window yoga and meditation room, a fully equipped gym and a stunning glassed-in pool (sure to be a fixture in “best pool” editorials) overlooking the golden Buddha in Thimphu below. Wellness go-ers should schedule a screening with the resort’s on-site medical doctor, who creates personalized wellness programs complete with nutritional guidance and targeted expert therapies for guests throughout their journey across the country.

Given the resort’s position nestled into the hillside, guests can also enjoy access to a variety of hiking trails immediately surrounding the property - making it easy to engage with the region’s natural flora and fauna from one’s doorstep.

Who Should Stay

The Thimphu lodge is the largest of the Six Senses Bhutan properties with the biggest spa. With spacious suites and villas, it works well for couples, friends and families alike. Six Senses stands out for its wellness focus and delicious, healthy cuisine.
