Review

When it opened in 2014, the Mandarin Oriental Taipei instantly became the city’s best luxury hotel. The acclaimed luxury brand decked the property out with an ultra-luxe spa and great restaurants, along with the largest and most comfortable accommodations in the city. The Mandarin Oriental Taipei bills itself an “urban retreat,” and it’s just that for many of its repeat guests, who come from mainland China and Japan for weekend getaways and rarely leave the confines of the hotel.

The Mandarin Oriental Taipei’s European-style façade belies its sleek interiors. From the outside, the building looks more like an 18th-century bank in London more than it does a modern, five-star hotel. It’s one of few contemporary structures in seemingly all of Taipei, and this was the goal of its owner, who travels frequently to Europe. Inside, there’s no mistaking that the hotel is a Mandarin Oriental, thanks to subtle Asian touches including a stained-glass peacock, which is a Chinese symbol for dignity and beauty.

The 303 rooms and suites are spacious, with cream-, purple- and teal-colored furniture and Art Deco fixtures, along with all-marble bathrooms. The facilities are impressive: the largest hotel spa in Taiwan has 12 treatment rooms, a yoga studio, a fitness center featuring Kinesis technology and a 65-foot outdoor swimming pool. Onsite dining options include a one-Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant, Ya Ge, and Café Un Deux Trois, an international café designed by celebrated interior designer Tony Chi.
