Jaipur is a world-class destination for precious gems and craftsmanship. Every trip reveals new sources for pashmina shawls, antique silver tribal jewelry, cashmere wraps, sandals and modern takes on traditional handcrafts—proof of what a thriving artisanal culture exists here. Each shop sets its own hours, so it’s wise to call ahead. Most bazaars are closed Sundays, and many hotel shops close in the afternoon and reopen from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. While prices vary widely and you can bargain, if you see something you love, grab it. Even in fixed price stores like Anokhi and Fabindia with many outlets, stock varies. Remember that luggage limits on domestic and international flights are strict, but shipping from reputable stores is reliable and quick (a week or so to the States) so it may be just as cost effective to send items as to carry them with you. Also, if you want to negotiate, you are best to do so on your own and not in the company of friends or a large group.
