Nihi Sumba’s first owner, Claude Graves, along with foundation co-founder Sean Downs, first established the Sumba Foundation in 2001. Meant to protect local Sumbanese culture and heritage while providing humanitarian aid to local villages, the foundation has set up four medical clinics, a malaria-treatment center and created over 100 wells and water stations. Profoundly impacting the island’s local communities, the foundation is responsible for eradicating 85% of malaria cases on the island and invites Nihi Sumba guests to visit a clinic and participate in serving lunch to children at a local school. A portion of the resort’s profits are repatriated into the foundation today, making it in integral part of the island’s preservation.
