Tokyo

Daikanyama T-Site, Daikanyama

A unique concept complex spread across three interconnected buildings bursts with global books, magazines, CDs and movies. Have a tea, coffee or cocktail at sleek Anjin Lounge pre- or post-browse. 17-5 Sarugakucho.

Ito-Ya, Ginza Occupying eight floors, this phenomenal paper goods store sells everything from office supplies to exquisite origami paper. 2-7-15 Ginza.

Sugimoto, Tsukiji Market Originally samurai sword makers, the Sugimoto family now crafts knives. Pick a model on which they can engrave your name in Japanese. 10-2, Tsukiji 4chome.

Kaikado, Shimogyo-ku A combined workshop and store, the beautiful handmade tin, brass and copper tealeaf caddies sold here are like little works of art. 84-1 Umeminato-cho.

The Jinbōchō neighborhood A must-visit for book lovers, the Jinbōchō neighborhood is teeming with rare-book shops. Each store has a different theme and while most carry books written in Japanese, some also have antique maps and paintings.

Kyoto

Arts & Science, Nakagyo-ku

This boutique sells beautifully made clothing and accessories, all in natural hues. My favorite are the unique statement jackets. 459 Hinokuchicho Kiyamachi.

Ippodo Tea Co., Nakagyo-ku The centuries-old Ippodo sells Japan’s best green tea. There are lots of varieties on offer and many come in artful tins.
