At a Glance

Atop Roppongi’s sophisticated 53-story Tokyo Midtown complex, the Ritz-Carlton Tokyo is a welcoming home-away-from-home for Western travelers in search of creature comforts and museums, restaurants and shops all at their fingertips. What the Ritz lacks in Japanese authenticity, it well makes up for with reliably top-notch service and panoramic city views.

Review

The stunning success of the Tokyo hotel format—hotel atop office block—gave rise to a slew of hotels designed along similar lines including this one atop Roppongi’s sophisticated 53-story Tokyo Midtown complex that combines corporate offices with an upmarket shopping mall and a food court with a branch of Dean & DeLuca nestled among specialty Japanese treats. This hotel certainly fine-tunes that head-in-the-clouds formula. The 45th floor houses a modern and expansive reception area and lounge under 30-foot ceilings; 245 guest rooms begin with 560-square-foot rooms and feature Frette linen, Diptyque bath amenities and panoramic city views. Décor in the standard rooms is vaguely Japanese and comfortable. For travelers looking for a stronger sense of place, we recommend the Modern Japanese Suite, complete with a tatami mat flooring and refined Japanese design.

The Ritz-Carlton's impressive variety of dining options include Azure 45, the elegant French restaurant that was awarded one Michelin-star in 2016, a modern bistro and a traditional Japanese eatery that specializes in kaiseki, sushi, tempura and teppanyaki styles. The property's vast spa will impress fitness buffs, while nightlife aficionados will be pleased that the hotel is a mere stroll from the busy, bar-lined streets of Roppongi. All in all, this is a great one-stop-shopping hotel—geared towards business yet well-suited for families—and within striking distance of most major offices and notable sites.

Who Should Stay

While more geared towards business travelers, leisure travelers with kids will be happy here, as families appreciate the indoor pool and the comprehensive dining options in the downstairs shopping mall. We recommend that families book rooms on the Club Floor, which includes a designated concierge team to assist with private check-in and anything needed throughout your stay, along with complimentary drinks and snacks available at specific times throughout the day.
