Review

El Nido Resorts has operated island hotels in Bacuit Bay for decades, but it wasn’t until they opened their highest-end property, Pangulasian, that they became serious competition for Amanpulo, the long-running luxury standard in the Philippines. Opened in 2012, El Nido Pangulasian has two key qualities that set it apart: first is its impressive, contemporary design that showcases the best of Filipino architecture and furniture, with sleek lines and open layouts employing traditional materials like rattan and abaca; second is its location within Bacuit Bay, a marine reserve famous for its vertiginous karst cliffs jutting out of the turquoise sea. The iconic image of Palawan, the karst formations are only found in two locations within this archipelago of 1,780 islands.

With only 42 accommodations (half of them beach villas) spread over 12 acres, Pangulasian feels intimate. There are two restaurants, one spa treatment room (in-room massages are also possible), a watersports center and an Environmental Center. Guests can borrow kayaks to explore the house reef, which is home to a number of turtles and stingrays. The real highlight, however, is taking a boat—whether a traditional outrigger or a motorboat—around Bacuit Bay. Few places in the world are as awe-inspiring as the gigantic karst cliffs, which are ringed by white sand and dotting the brilliant blue sea for miles around. Within these towering sea mountains are shallow lagoons and hidden beaches. Since the islands are public, it’s inevitable to run into other boats, as tourism in nearby El Nido town is booming. Pangulasian offers complimentary boat trips, but private charters are also an option and worth it to avoid the crowds on several islands.

Who Should Stay

Travelers looking for a more dynamic and social experience—where the highlight is boating to nearby islands—will prefer Pangulasian over Amanpulo, which prides itself on its remote location. Also, the resort is located in the striking limestone karst area of Palawan, which is a draw to many.

Getting There

Travelers must fly from Manila to El Nido (approximately 1 hour), and take a 25-minute boat ride (arranged by El Nido staff) to the island.
