Long treated as Southeast Asia’s stepchild – overachieving, handsome and trying too hard – Singapore is often portrayed as a flyover destination. But considering what an extraordinary gateway the city is and the many different and enriching experiences it offers, Singapore is well deserving of a more extensive layover, both pre- and post-journey.

Lay of the Land

For the leisure traveler, Singapore’s relevant neighborhoods include the waterfront Marina Bay area, the historic Downtown District and the Orchard Road shopping thoroughfare, located deeper in the city. Singapore’s waterfront marina area has been massively developed and now features a lovely promenade; numerous waterfront restaurants and bars have opened alongside it. And several good eateries can be found in Kampong Glam, the city’s Arab neighborhood, which is not far from the marina.
