Hong Tauw Inn
A favorite of exiled prime minister Taksin Shinawatra (originally a Chiang Mai native), this homey, fan cooled eatery serves authentic northern Thai fare like pomelo salad, coconut curry with minced pork and the signature Hong Tauw fish.
The Restaurant
Sunday brunch draws Chiang Mai’s expats to The Restaurant at the Anantara, which is set on a tree-shaded riverside wooden deck (it’s housed in the former British Consulate). The offerings include tropical fruits and juices, fresh-baked goods and hot entrees made to order. Lunch and dinner are equally East-meets-West, with contemporary takes on classics, like the locally raised duck confit served on fresh mozzarella sliced with mini tomatoes in a Japanese sake dressing. Authentic Indian cuisine and classic British afternoon tea are other popular draws. Those with special dietary requirements will be especially pleased to know that this stunning eatery is equally adept at gourmet lactose-free, gluten-fee, halal and kosher dishes.
The Salad Concept
Started by two Thai sisters to help their father recover from cancer (which he did), this is a welcome form of destination dining when you’ve been overfed with Thai noodles and fried dishes. Plates here focus on healthy, edible delights grown locally. Customize your salad or select one of their reliable combinations. All of these crunchy creations taste even better washed down with a fresh fruit shake. The location, amidst one of Chiang Mai’s top shopping neighborhoods, encourages regular refueling stops.
