An Indagare member asked: I can’t decide whether to go to Phuket or Koh Samui with three children, ages 11, 13 and 15. I have read mixed reviews about the Amanpuri in Phuket and the Four Seasons in Koh Samui. Any suggestions about which island is better suited for our family?
I think it depends on what kind of activities your family likes. The Aman is definitely older and more Asian zen (in best way) than the Four Seasons, which I hear is just gorgeous but in a latest, greatest kind of way. For younger kids, Four Seasons is not meant to be a great option because lots of steps and rocky hills. Phuket has many more restaurant and shop options but Koh Samui has the elephant trekking and boating.
in Phuket has a slightly monkish air which doesn’t really go with larks in the pool. I feel it is very much more a honeymoon island. Personally I would say go for Samui – fewer hoi polloi and more fun. I think you should consider the Six Senses Hideaway there, which is a little younger than the Four Seasons with an awesome infinity pool and a great spa and really sleek villas. The staff really look after you. If you had time you could combine it with Chiang Mai – there are direct flights from Samui to Chaing Mai.
We only feature hotels that we can vouch for first-hand. At many of them, Indagare members receive special amenities.
