Food at CocoMaya, British Virgin Islands, Caribbean

CocoMaya

With its thatched roof, teak furniture and straw swing set swaying over the sand, CocoMaya perfectly owns its role as an upscale beach cabana. But don’t expect to find the standard fare of burgers and jerk chicken here. Instead, the waterfront eatery serves tasty, shareable Asian-Latin fusion tapas, including creative ceviche and sushi rolls, lobster tacos and duck with scallion pancakes. Go for the excellent seafood and stay for the stunning view, cool ambiance and a nightcap around the beachside firepit.

Hog Heaven

For the best view on Virgin Gorda, make your way all the way up the road to Hog Heaven, a casual hilltop joint beloved by locals and tourists alike. Don’t expect anything fancy; the restaurant is essentially a blue shack that sits on the side of the road on the island’s highest peak, with a wrap-around porch for the express purpose of tossing back piña coladas and admiring the panoramic view, which is to die for; you can see North Sound, Saba Rock, Necker Island and even Anegada on clear days. Barbecued pork from organic meat supplied by a local farmer (a rare thing in the import-heavy BVI restaurants) is the focus and the hearty fare includes ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, BBQ chicken, conch chowder, potato salad and fried plantains.

Ambience : Soggy Dollar Bar, British Virgin Islands, Caribbean

Soggy Dollar Bar

Though the scene can get cheesy at times, many argue that the Soggy Dollar Bar is the quintessential Caribbean beach bar. Named for the wet bills used by sailors who swam ashore before a road was built to access White Bay, the party spot is said to have invented the Painkiller, a rum cocktail with pineapple and orange juice and cream of coconut. Expect free-flowing drinks, island tunes from local musicians and a white-sand beach complete with hammocks and a stunning view.
