At a Glance

Along a curving hillside on the verdant eastern shore of this five-square-mile island in the Grenadines, Mandarin Oriental, Canouan is a study in luxury, with gracious staff striking the perfect balance between being attentive and discreet. The 26 suites clustered by the beach, plus lagoon and hilltop villas, showcase elegant, colonial-inspired design with marbled floors and archways, sprawling terraces and contemporary accents. The resort’s forested peaks occupy more than a third of Canouan itself, and everything is yours to explore: from the Jim Fazio-designed, 18-hole golf course to the spa, to the summit of Mount Royal, which, at 877 feet, is the island’s tallest point. (The resort is involved in the island’s communities: its give-back program, Cargo 4 Kids, asks guests to bring school supplies to donate to local classrooms in need.) Day excursions to Mustique or the marine reserve at Tobago Cays take guests further afield. Of course, lounging under one of the signature pink umbrellas at Godahl Beach or by the infinity pool is also an enticing option.

The Standout: The eight ocean view Patio Villas, on a hillside with private infinity pools and Jacuzzis
Don’t Miss: An excursion to the nearby picturesque Tobago Cays marine reserve to snorkel with sea turtles and starfish

Mandarin Oriental, Canouan Review

A part of the sprawling, 1,200-acre Canouan Estate, the luxe Mandarin Oriental, Canouan opened in 2016 after years of changing ownership and a massive $200 million renovation. In 2017, the resort joined the prestigious Mandarin Oriental portfolio. The hotel commands the perfect location on Canouan: a quiet curve of lush hillside that looks out over the stunning, pristine sands of Godahl Beach. In contrast to the extraordinary emerald-blue ocean, the décor of the hotel is an intriguing mix of cool grey marble, pale ceilings and walls and hot pink accents.

The 39-suite and villa property is undeniably cutting-edge and contemporary, yet its glossy newness is tastefully balanced with elegant, European design more suited to elite cosmopolitan hotels than a boutique island hideaway. The décor of each suite, all of which have ocean views, has a touch of colonial Caribbean flair: dark mahogany accents, vintage trunks at the end of each bed, plantation chairs with sloped backs and light, airy draperies are reminiscent of British West Indies style. All are equipped with large walk-in closets, marble bathrooms with double vanities, a coffee and tea bar and state-of-the-art technology: iPads placed around the suite allow guests to do everything from make a spa appointment to control the TV.

On-property amenities include a sleek infinity pool and three-tier terrace, two white-sand beaches, three restaurants (and two more at Canouan Estate), a boutique and a stunning spa built into the cliff side and accessed by a funicular. Guests of the hotel also have access to all of Canouan Estate’s amenities, which include the tennis courts, Kids’ Club and Jim Fazio–designed golf course that is considered one of the best in the Caribbean.

There are four restaurants, ranging from a casual, on-the-beach lunch spot with thatched huts to the formal Juliet, which boasts a stunning Art Deco bar. In the morning, guests can indulge in healthful fare on the lovely terrace at Lagoon Café.
