Review
If you can, arrive at Marigot Bay Resort via boat: it’s the best introduction to this luxury property situated in the historic eponymous bay. Framed by emerald hills, the bay has one of the Caribbean’s prettiest marinas, where movies like Doctor Doolittle were filmed in the 1960s , attracting a glitzy yacht crowd including movie stars like Sophia Loren and Rex Harrison.
Marigot Bay Resort’s manicured property comprises an airy main house, multiple restaurants, spa and fitness center, and a reception area, as well as 67 rooms and 57 suites, most of which are in multi-level wood buildings that have an Asian feel to them. The design scheme is luxurious in its details, with massive dark-wood furniture, sumptuous fabrics, flat-screen televisions and slate-tile bathrooms boasting spacious showers and an array of Kiehl’s products (the sunscreen and lip balm were particularly appreciated). There’s air-conditioning in all the bedrooms, and suites come with state-of-the-art washers and dryers, plus Italian Aster Cucine kitchens, a great touch for parents who don’t want to bring the kids along for every meal.
For the best views, book a room on the top floor facing the marina. A word of warning: these rooms require some stair climbing, so people traveling with young children will probably be happier in the ground-floor Mangrove rooms, which open onto the marina. Discovery is a friendly place for families, and there were kids of all ages when I visited. Rooms and suites connect easily (you can even rent a two-story house with a small plunge pool); plus, there’s a children’s pool and a babysitting service that pairs you with the same nanny for the length of your stay (this is not included in the room price).
The hotel’s overall look and amenities (including BOSE surround sound and Wi-Fi) may seem a touch less specific to St. Lucia than a more organic resort like Anse Chastanet, but Discovery encourages guests to connect to the island in a different—and important—way. Discovery can also arrange for half-day excursions around the island. The fact that there’s no great beach at Marigot Bay Resort is another reason to go exploring, though many guests seemed content to lounge at one of the two pools.
Who Should Stay
Marigot Bay Resort is a good choice for travelers who want to be very comfortable, appreciate a hotel with a sense of history, wish to explore life outside the property and do not require that a beach be directly outside their doorstep.
