Lay of the Land
St. Martin, split between French and Dutch territories, is one of the northern Leeward Islands in the Caribbean Sea. While the island is home to an international airport and one spectacular resort, Belmond La Samanna, St. Martin is largely built-up and touristy, so works better as a jumping-off point to other Caribbean islands.
Most major airlines service the island’s Princess Juliana Airport, with direct flights from many major cities including New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. The island also serves as a gateway to nearby Anguilla and St. Barth’s. The airport is located on the Dutch side, so those who are continuing to Anguilla or St. Barth’s will need to go through immigration twice.
