Casa das Rosas

The colonial mansion of a famed Brazilian architect, Casa das Rosas was turned into a cultural center at the end of the 20th century. There are lovely rose gardens on the property and a small café, which are both peaceful places to rest within the bustling city. The cultural center hosts many events, classes and exhibitions, and also houses the first library in the country that is dedicated to poetry.

The pleasant small town of Embu das Artes (Embu for short), located 31 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of São Paulo city, is a must day trip for anyone interested in uncovering all manner of Brazilian art, antiques, home décor and handicrafts.  The community, founded in 1554, has become a conclave of hippies, artists and intellectuals over the years and its outdoor artisan fair, held on weekends, is a treasure trove of both unique pieces and more ubiquitous handicrafts. Tack on several rustic restaurants and bars and it's a perfect little escape from the big city.

Ibirapuera Park

Ibirapuera Park is not just São Paulo’s beloved green space, but also home to two great museums, the Museo Afro Brasil and the Modern Art Museum. The space also boasts dramatic buildings by legendary architect Oscar Niemayer such as the Biennale building and Oca.

MASP

Nearly as much for its emblematic architecture (a Modernism classic designed by Italian-born Lina Bo Bardi in 1968) as the art inside, the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) is the city's one true iconic symbol, standing sentinel on the city's most important avenue like a warrior of the urban might. It houses the most important and comprehensive collection of Western Art in Latin America.

Building at Mercado Municipal , São Paulo, Brazil

Mercado Municipal

The best urban market in South America, nicknamed "Mercadão" ("Big Market"), is a Belle Époque beauty of Russian-designed stained glass and vast domes opened in 1933. Inside are rows and rows of mostly gourmet food-related products: Fresh fish, meat and game; and several worthwhile snack stalls, bars and sit-down restaurants. For the gastronomically inclined, this is Eden, all 12,600 square meters of it. Make an afternoon of it.

Museu de Arte Moderna

Located in Ibirapuera Park, São Paulo’s largest park, MAM is a contemporary sculpture garden. The institution was founded in 1948 by Francisco Matarazzo, who drew inspiration from New York’s MoMA. MAM is one of Brazil’s best open-air exhibitions and the collection is often shown on a revolving, temporary basis. Closed Mondays.

Pacaembu Stadium & Museu do Futebol

This huge municipal soccer stadium is home to the Palmeiras futebol club. There is an on-premises soccer museum with interactive exhibits on the history of Brazilian soccer.

This neoclassical monolith, the city's oldest, is São Paulo's other important museum (after MASP) and is especially notable for its collection of Brazilian (Portinari, Di Calvacanti) and Paulista art. Founded in 1905, it's heavy on 19th-century paintings and sculptures and is especially pleasant for its outdoor café overlooking Parque da Luz, a lovely swath of green in downtown's concrete jungle.

Theatro Municipal

The single most beautiful building in the city is a showstopper: Styled after the Palais Garnier in Paris yet embracing a potpourri of architectural styles from Baroque to Art Nouveau, today it stands as one of the continent's most important cultural venues. The theater is home to São Paulo Municipal Symphonic Orchestra, the Coral Lírico (Lyric Choir) and the City Ballet of São Paulo. Free tours in English run Tuesday to Friday at 11am and 5pm and Saturday at noon.
