Neighborhood Watch: Santiago’s Lastarria

Santiago

's charming Lastarria district, bustling with sidewalk cafés, quaint restaurants and markets, is also home to the hottest new hotel in the city. The intimate nine-floor Singular hotel, which opened its doors in late 2014, was inspired by neoclassical French architecture and the neighborhood’s early-20th-century buildings. Although built from the ground up, it feels like a classic that has been around for years.

The sixty-two guest rooms are bright and spacious, decorated in muted palates of creams and grays. Blending contemporary and classic styles, they are warm and inviting. A few have balconies, but only those on higher floors offer a view.

A 3,300-square-foot subterranean spa offers special chakra treatments focused on creating physical, mental and spiritual harmony. The best space in the hotel, however, is the roof, which holds a pool and a terrace that draws a local after-work crowd with its large wooden bar area and views over the city. There is also downstairs lounge where expert bartenders have perfected the art of mixing cocktails. In the ground-floor restaurant—elegant but relaxed, with linen tablecloths, checkered floors and sparkling chandeliers—waiters in bow ties serve local seasonal dishes accompanied by wines drawn from a list featuring a great selection of local varietals.

With an excellent staff providing service that is at once attentive and discreet, the boutique Singular offers travelers all they could wish from a city-hotel experience: a great location, comfortable rooms, delicious food and fabulous amenities.

Neighborhood Favorites

Lastarria exudes a dynamic charm, with its cobblestoned streets, vibrant cafés, boutiques, galleries and art museum. Home to Santiago’s creative elite in the 20th century, the neighborhood is one of the city’s most stylish. Bordered by the leafy Parque Forestal and up-and-coming Bellas Artes district, Lastarria is a unique blend of classic façades, traditional barrio and a chic bohemian spirit. Here are Indagare’s top picks for restaurants in this authentic and well-heeled neighborhood.

Catedral: Opera’s lively sister, Catedral serves Chilean and European-inspired food and drinks in a buzzy atmosphere.

Bocanariz: A wine bar celebrating the wide spectrum of Chilean wines, including boutique labels and little-known varietals, Bocanariz also prepares local dishes in flavors smoked, sweet and light.

Mulato: With a menu that changes to incorporate whatever is fresh at the local markets, Mulato serves its innovative fare either alfresco or in the elegant dining room.
