Santiago’s many cultural offerings, including fine food and boutiques, are entirely captivating. The Chilean capital is in the spotlight, and for good reason: old world charm meets with modern amenities, breathtaking landscapes and a vibrant culinary scene. And with both ski resorts and beaches just 90 minutes away by car, the city is a cosmopolitan and alluring hub for commencing a Chilean journey.

  • Two Days: Essential Santiago and Beyond-LP

Two Days: Essential Santiago and Beyond

Most leisure travelers need to fly through cosmopolitan Santiago en route to the country’s most remote attractions: Patagonia or the Atacama Desert. But that is no reason to bypass the opportunity to explore Santiago. Indagare can arrange a customized itinerary with special access and guided touring. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

    • Day One: City Tour

A half-day city tour will provide an overview of Santiago’s most interesting neighborhoods. Your guide will take you to the historic Mercado Central to see its stalls teeming with exotic produce and seafood, and to visit Pablo Neruda’s beloved home, La Chascona, in bohemian Bellavista. Afterward, stroll through barrio Lastarria, where you may want to see what’s on at the Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (a government building turned arts complex named in honor of Chile’s most celebrated female poet) or stop for ice cream made with lúcuma and ulmo honey at neighborhood fixture Emporio La Rosa.

    • Day Two Option: Valparaiso

One option for your second day in Santiago is to head west and spend a day exploring Valparaíso (“Valpo”) and Viña del Mar, a vibrant seaport with distinctive hills clad in rainbow-colored Victorian mansions, funiculars and collegiate cafés. Little has been changed or renovated since the city’s heyday in the 19th century and the town is scrappy but charming. Walls are covered with beautiful and vibrant graffiti, representing everything from pithy cultural references to what could be considered works of art.

    • Day Two Option: Casablanca Wine Region

Another favorite excursion outside of Santiago is wine tasting. Indagare can arrange a car and driver who will take you for tastings of Pinots and Syrahs at our favorite wineries in the Casablanca Valley. Kingston Family Vineyards was founded by the descendants of an American who came to Chile in the early 1900s to search for gold, while Morandé is owned by the man who first saw the valley’s vast wine-making potential. The vineyard is home to an outstanding restaurant.

“Experiencing the chardonnay grape harvest at Kingston Family Vineyards was a huge treat for our whole family. They let the kids eat grapes off of the sorting tables and participate in the selection process. The private lunch setting was pastoral, and the food was delicious.”

“Santiago’s Lastarria neighborhood exudes a dynamic charm, with its cobblestoned streets, vibrant cafés, boutiques, galleries and art museum. Home to Santiago’s creative elite in the 20th century, the neighborhood is one of the city’s most stylish.”
