Review

Opened in 2012, this 30-room boutique hotel is the result of turning three adjoining, 17th-century buildings into the most stunning hotel in Cartagena.  Here modern luxuries including Frette sheets, remarkably fast Wi-Fi, iPads and gourmet mini-bars mingle with lovingly restored architectural elements including original frescoes and tiles and remnants of a 400-year-old aqueduct that now forms part of the hotel’s commanding ground-floor pool.

The 20 rooms and 10 suites are elegantly furnished and spacious with ceilings that soar to more than 25 feet and large marble bathrooms. Some rooms also boast balconies with lovely city views and private plunge pools. All of the rooms have a unique layout since the hotel was created from three mansions.

The location is superb, in the heart of Cartagena's bustling colonial quarter, and the hotel is a haven to return to with thoughtful touches in the lobby like fruit-infused water and scent diffusers. The restaurant, Alma, is renowned for its excellent cuisine, which many say is the best in the city. The hotel has a beautiful pool, but because it is in a shaded courtyard, the hotel offers a solarium area with loungers. There is also an incredible spa with a gorgeous Hammam treatment room, but no gym.

Casa San Agustin recently opened a private beach called Acasi, located just 45 minutes from the hotel in the Rosario Islands. The beach is exclusive to guests of the hotel, and a visit can be arranged through the concierge desk.
