Long Weekend: Cartagena

Indagare member Hallie Fergusonand her husband recently returned from a trip to Cartagena. Here are her impressions from the trip.

The trip was everything I hoped it would be. Our hotel, the Casa San Agustin, is one of the prettiest we’ve ever stayed in and I would recommend it to anyone. The blend of old and new architecture is breathtaking and our room was perfect for us. We ate dinner at the hotel the first night because we arrived so late. The food was delicious and the bar had a good selection of wines and cocktails.

Our guides were fantastic. The expert for our historical tour managed to be knowledgeable and funny at the same time, and we had a particularly lovely woman give us a tour of the Cartagena art scene. (Contact Indagare to arrange touring).

Our itinerary was perfect for the amount of time we had; Cartagena is an easy destination for a long weekend, although we would have enjoyed more time. We enjoyed a day trip to the Rosario Islands and did not mind the hour-long ride on the hotel boat. There was a raucous group of Colombians with us who were celebrating a wedding, but this only made us appreciate the moment more! Perhaps next time we will spend a night at the islands for a different experience.

All the restaurants Indagare suggested had great food and atmospheres. La Mulata was one of our favorites and should be on everyone’s list.

The trip was a great winter getaway and we just might have to make it an annual event. Cartagena is such a charming and beautiful city; we wish we lived in New York so that we could take a direct flight and go more often!
