Masaya Market

Essentially unchanged since 1888, Masaya is based on the historic 16th-century market the enterprising indigenous population set up to sell shoes and hammocks to Spanish colonists. While items made from real tortoise shell are widely available, avoid buying them as the turtles are endangered and poached for their shells. It is also illegal to bring tortoise shell products into many countries and customs officers look out for such souvenirs.
