Though not brand-new, the historic Saint James Paris just completed a full redesign by Laura Gonzalez that has created a novel experience for visitors to the City of Light. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the 16th arrondissement, this whimsical 48-room hotel particulier surrounded by lush gardens is the only chateau hotel in Paris, and is a charming country-style retreat within the city. While all spaces share an eccentric and residential quality, no two rooms are the same. The property doubles as a private social club, adding to its appeal (lunch at the restaurant is reserved for members only). Parisians stop by for cocktails in the classically English library and to enjoy meals in the impressive dining room over which Michelin-starred chef Virginie Basselot resides. Her restaurant, Bellefeuille, has a gorgeous pergola bar with tables in the garden—perfect for summer dinners—and much of the produce is sourced from their garden outside the city. White wrought-iron furniture and tented gazebos (in the form of hot-air balloons) occupy the garden where guests and members can make themselves comfortable for aperitifs in the warmer months. Known for creating a "Sense of Place," the Rosewood brand will open its first property in Austria later this summer in the heart of Vienna's historic Old Town, in a 19th-century building on one of its most famous squares, Petersplatz. With a fresh and airy feel that lends a contemporary twist, the design of the 99 spacious rooms and 27 suites evokes the stately sophistication of the Imperial Era, alongside Belle Époque architecture. The property is sure to provide an atmospheric home base after a day of touring and shopping. Plus: Don't miss a relaxing stroll through the hotel gardens, a trip to the signature spa and a cocktail with prime city views at the rooftop bar. Opens July 2022

In major hotel headlines, a city-chic sister to the Indagare-adored (and Indagare Index) property Gleneagles, a sprawling pastoral playground in the Scottish Highlands, will open this spring in Edinburgh—marking the first addition to the iconic brand in nearly a century. Housed within one of the oldest buildings on St. Andrew Square and featuring just 33 rooms, Gleneagles Townhouse promises an intimate, in-the-know experience (and it will also be home to a members-only club). The townhouse, which was a former bank, was carefully restored by Ennismore Design Studio—and with this reincarnation, no two rooms will look the same. Historic details like canopy crown headboards, antique lighting and original fireplaces ensure the sense of tradition that travelers to Scotland crave, while a contemporary, buzzy restaurant, The Spence, and rooftop bar, as well as a collection of modern artwork, will bring the townhouse into the 21st century in style.
