Review

Back when the Austro-Hungarian Empire reigned over Istria, a forward-thinking man named Meneghetti decided to purchase a plot of land, building a villa that many proclaimed the most beautiful in the region. Because the land was near an Austro-Hungarian fort, Meneghetti began producing food and wine for the 6,000 nearby soldiers. But when the monarchy fell, so did care for the property, until a Croatian couple rediscovered the land and decided to reinvigorate the destination. Ever since, it has been a popular spot for food and wine lovers, nature enthusiasts and couples and families alike.

The property has 40 units (soon to be 50 in 2022) spread across the expansive grounds that, when paired with the surrounding vineyards and olive groves, give the hotel both a boutique and serene feel. While the traditional facades pay homage to the region, the contemporary interiors are more Scandinavian in feel, with soulful details like wooden beams that line the ceilings. The tones—light browns and whites with pops of blue—are muted and calming, and give the property a relaxed elegance, as does the private pool at many of the stand-alone units. The best rooms for both couples and families are the Residences and Villas, which range from one to three bedrooms.

With a tasting room, spa, small gym, beach club, fabulous restaurant and multiple pools, many guests may be happy to spend their entire stay on property, but the real draw of Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery is the surrounding region. Picturesque towns such as Pula, Bale and Rovinj are just a drive away. Other activities include a boat day to the Brijuni Islands, truffle hunting, hiking and more. Istria has so much to offer and is a destination for anyone who loves natural beauty, culture, food and wine.
