With its 18th-century Baroque palaces, Gothic churches, a UNESCO-protected historic center and impressive bridges on the Vltava River, Prague is one of those European cities whose honeyed beauty feels close to perfect. Thanks to various enlightened rulers, Prague enjoyed a number of golden eras, and many of magnificent squares and cultural institutions remain today in “the city of 100 spires.”

    3 Days: Essential Prague

Prague’s main sights are best seen with a guide who can allow you special access and provide historical context. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

    • Day 1: Old Town

Take a walking tour with your private guide of the Old Town, starting with a visit to Old Town Square, one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Europe. Your guide will take you to the top of Old Town Hall for panoramic views of the city. Be sure to observe the procession of the Twelve Apostles on the Astronomical Clock. See the stunning St. Nicholas Church and the gothic Church of Our Lady before Tyn. Afterwards, visit the Estates Theater where Mozart’s Don Giovanni was first performed.

    • Day 2: Mala Strana

With your private guide, explore the Mala Strana district (the Lesser Town or Little Quarter), which clusters around the foothills of Prague Castle, on the opposite side of the river. Almost too picturesque–with its ancient burgher houses and quaint side streets–quiet Mala Strana is a sleepy neighborhood that needs to be experienced with a guide who knows the ins and outs. After lunch, head to the hilltop Prague Castle and end the day with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Strahov Library.

    • Day 3: Josefov Tour

In Josefov, the Jewish quarter of Prague, visit the 13th century Alt-Neu Synagogue; the Maisel Synagogue, home to a large collection of silverware, previously confiscated by the Nazis; the Pinkas Synagogue, where the walls inside are covered with the names of the Holocaust victims from Bohemia and Moravia; and the adjacent 15th century Jewish Cemetery. Families might also be interested in a day trip outside the city to a charming medieval town or traditional working farm.

“I thought the Mandarin Oriental was excellent. I loved that it was a former monastery and that its location, away from the old city, functioned as a quiet oasis. Also, I had the best massage of my life in their small but extremely beautiful spa.”

“If there were ever a city in which timing matters, it would be Prague. The way light falls on buildings and gardens makes already haunting scenes take on a new quality when seen at particular times of day. Most tourists tend to not be the get-up-and-go type in this city (maybe because of the emphasis of absinthe and beer drinking late into the night?). This allows early risers to have meaningful experiences alone with towering monuments.”
