At a Glance

Housed in a historic building originally constructed as an exclusive Edwardian gentlemen’s club, the Mandarin Oriental now welcomes equally powerful but much more chic patrons.

  • The open kitchen at in-house restaurant Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, where the Michelin-starred chef prepares dishes inspired by Britain’s historic gastronomic past (think: recipes dating from the Royal Courts of King Henry VIII)
  • The romantic suites built into the turrets of the building
  • The Asian-influenced Mandarin Spa and heated indoor pool for post-shopping relaxation

Review

Fully renovated in the spring of 2019, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park feels completely fresh. The aesthetic of neighboring Hyde Park is impeccably woven into the hotel's new design, including neutral greens, flowers and equestrian-inspired décor. Even the lines on some ceilings depict the running paths of the park (which the suites overlook). The wellbeing facility includes a 55-foot heated indoor pool and a state-of-the-art fitness center, which overlooks the turquoise water and dramatic slate-gray pool deck. Locker room facilities have a steam room (women’s) and sauna (men’s), but those looking for real post-workout relaxation should head to the spa, also located on the hotel’s lower level. The Mandarin Spa's facilities include a sanarium (a low-heat sauna), an amethyst crystal steam room and a vitality pool (a mineral bath with hydrotherapy body jets). An afternoon appointment for a signature Asian-influenced mind-body-spirit ritual is one of the toughest reservations in town, and the hotel recommends that guests book the treatment three to four weeks in advance. Of its 181 guest rooms, the hotel’s crown jewel is the Royal Suite. This stylish apartment offers more than 2,600 square feet of living space (including three bedrooms, a living room, a dining room and a kitchen) as well as a balcony overlooking Hyde Park, which can hold up to 40 people.

Who Should Stay

Travelers who want proximity to Knightsbridge shopping (you can dart across to Harvey Nichols for a quick fix of cool Britannia shopping) and buzzy in-house restaurants (the grand Dinner by Heston Blumenthal off the lobby and the clubby Bar Boulud on street level) but prefer a historic setting with more of an Old World look upstairs.
