Review

Built in 1924, the former Midland Bank Building has been completely overhauled into a boutique hotel-cum-members club à la SoHo House (a co-founder) with nine restaurants and bars, an impressive spa and fitness center and what is sure to be this summer’s hottest outdoor space in London – a rooftop pool and terrace, looking out on London’s cityscape.

The property's buzzy lobby exudes old world glamour with classic décor that blends vintage florals, brass hardware, elegant velvets and fringed detail, inspired by mid-century ocean liners and luxury trains. The massive lobby was once the Grand Banking Hall, and retains original elements like black and white checkered tile floors and soaring ceilings, punctuated by 92 verdite columns. The original walnut bank teller booths have been repurposed to create different bars and restaurants within the great space, each offering a unique ambiance and cuisine. Diners can take their pick from the Parisian style cafe, New York style Jewish deli, Italian brasserie, SoCal health food spot, American diner, Asian Fusion grill, among others, but of particular highlight is Millie’s Lounge, which serves British fare and is one of London’s only fine dining venues with doors open 24/7.

The property also boasts one of London’s most exclusive new watering holes: The Vault Bar. Hiding behind an original 30-ton iron vault (mysteriously cast open, as if mid robbery), the Vault Bar is walled with over 3,000 engraved stainless steel safe deposit boxes, concealing who knows what kind of treasures. This cool space is only open to hotel guests and members of the Soho House style social group, the Ned’s Club, but it's a popular spot, so we recommend booking in advance.

The 252 guest rooms range from ‘The Crash Pad,’ at a cozy 180 sqft, to the opulent Terrace and Duplex Suites, complete with draped, oversized king beds, mahogany fireplaces and subway tiled bathrooms with roll-top tubs. The elegant décor harkens to a bygone era without slacking on modern day comforts –  the antique dressing table and stool in every room are outfitted with multiple plugs and rooms boast hi-tech amenities. Reserve a room on the higher floors to avoid hearing the nightlife noise.

The fitness and wellness center is expansive, complete with an indoor pool, full workout center, boxing ring, TRX section  and cycling, HIIT and yoga studios. They also have a large full service spa complete with manicure and pedicure rooms, hair salon, makeup room and barbershop.

The Ned's crown jewel is undoubtedly the rooftop terrace and infinity pool. Overlooking St. Paul’s and the Shard, it boasts a singularly unique view in London. The sleek swimming pool is surrounded by sprawling, floral-printed day beds, striped umbrellas and a colorful, terra cotta covered Mediterranean restaurant.

Who Should Stay

Younger couples looking for a fun, lively energy and anyone who wants a hip, rooftop scene. It is also a great option for visitors who know the city well and want to explore an area that is off the beaten path.
