Review

The Stafford encompasses three buildings, including the 67-room Main House; the romantic Carriage House, a former stables that is now home to 11 suites with country home interiors; and the Mews, housing 26 surprisingly modern suites. The Mews offer a more contemporary ambiance, whereas the Main House and the Carriage House offer something more traditional and understated. There is also a Penthouse apartment with a private roof terrace and the three-story, two-bedroom Gatehouse, offering guests their own private townhouse. A quintessential British vibe prevails, and even though the hotel is just steps from Piccadilly and the area’s acclaimed contemporary art galleries, it feels wonderfully tucked away and quiet. With a large repeat clientele, it is no surprise that there is a country club atmosphere, but staff bends over backwards to make newcomers feel at home.

The American Bar has been one of London’s most famous watering holes for visitors since the 1930s and relaunched in the spring of 2018 with refurbished interiors (including a marble bar) and a new menu showcasing Italian and Spanish flavors as well as locally inspired cocktails, such as “The QM,” named after frequent patron Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The Game Bird restaurant serves contemporary twists on British classics. There is also a 380-year-old wine cellar, which is perfect for private parties, and houses a bunker that was home to Canadian and American soldiers in World War II. Guests wishing to maintain their fitness regimen while traveling can make use of the small gym in the Mews building, but there is no spa.
