Gymkhana comes from the team behind Michelin-starred Trishna, but for their Mayfair spot they drew on the colonial charm of the British Raj period. Gymkhana clubs were 17th-century watering holes for the Brits stationed in India, and the décor features lots of dark slatted oak paneling, ceiling fans, rattan seats and brass fixtures. (The bathrooms have toilets with varnished oak seats and long brass pull chords to flush.) The menu focuses on contemporary Indian food with delicious curries and tikka and game and vegetarian menus. The downstairs bar specializes in punches that might have been served to Earl Mountbatten and draws a business crowd at lunch. Come for excellent Indian food and a nostalgic atmosphere.
