At a GlanceThe wow-factor of this boutique property, an eight-minute drive outside of Bonifacio, is a spot-on view of the town's citadel from a hillside that faces the limestone cliffs. ReviewPerched on a hillside outside of Bonifacio, this designer hotel is a good option for people who want to escape the summer bustle of Corsica’s most scenic citadelle towns. The fourteen rooms are housed in freestanding houses (two per building), with lattice wood fencing separating outside patios. Interiors are very comfortable, with large bathrooms (no bathtubs but large showers). The style is minimalist with blonde and chocolate-colored woods, big four-post beds and touches of contemporary art. Unlike some of the older hotels on Corsica, Version Maquis has plugs where you want to find them, WiFi that works and flat-screen televisions. Even though rooms are comfortable, this is not the type of property where guests spend much time in them. Either they are sightseeing in this southern part of Corsica or they are lounging by the Version Maquis’ large pool with excellent views of Bonifacio’s citadelle. This panorama becomes even more spectacular in the late afternoon’s golden light when having a glass of crisp Corsican white or a Cap Corse cocktail is a real pleasure here. Best of all, the restaurant is excellent, so there’s no need to leave the hotel for dinner. In the large open kitchen, you can watch the young chefs at work, turning out a well-edited, often-changing menu of Corsican and Mediterranean favorites. (Even for guests not staying here, coming for dinner is highly recommended.) The vibe is relaxed and cool; the staff is young but very helpful; and the crowd is a nice mix of couples, honeymooners and friends traveling together (however, families might find the lack of common spaces a bit constricting).Who Should StayCouples, design-conscious and laid-back travelers. Anyone who wants to be based in within a short drive from Bonifacio but away from the summer crowds.
