Hôtel Alpaga Megève

The 22 rooms tucked into Alpaga’s 11 antique alpine chalets are beautifully furnished with crisp, white linens, faux fur throws and whitewashed exposed wood-paneled walls and beamed ceilings. At once managing to be comfortable and modernly stylish, the hotel is a great choice for couples who don’t need to be in the center of town.

The beautiful Spa La Colline boasts an indoor pool, outdoor sauna and small fitness center, and is the kind of spot where skiers flock to post-slopes—and non-skiers relax for much of the day. There are two restaurants, highlighted by the Michelin-starred La Table de l’Alpaga, which has won awards and holds great prestige in the French culinary tradition. L’Onyx is an excellent, more casual dining option and is itself a destination restaurant for its cool bistro-chic interiors, modern takes on classic dishes and excellent bar.

Six chalets range in size and are an excellent choice for large families or groups of friends looking for the privacy and autonomy of a private home, but with the amenities of a five-star hotel.

Le Fer à Cheval

Le Fer à Cheval was built in 1938 by the local blacksmith (ergo the name) and converted into a lovely, quiet chalet-style hotel in the 1960s.

Le Lodge Park

Outfitted with heavy tartan fabrics, antlers and faux fur throws, Le Lodge Park looks to have taken its inspiration from Adirondacks camps and Scottish hunting lodges as much as from the French Alps. The stylishness, however, doesn’t get in the way of the property’s comfort, and the hotel is one the most refined choices in Megève.

The 49 guest rooms, which include 10 suites are not as spacious as sister property Les Fermes des Marie, but the property makes up for this with its excellent location in the middle of town, within short walking distance to the Chamois ski lift, as well as restaurants and shopping galore. Le Lodge Park is itself a hot spot, with its bar being one of Megève’s favorite après ski haunts that remains popular throughout the afternoon and evening, and Beef Lodge, the refined lobby steakhouse restaurant.

There is an excellent subterranean spa with a beautiful, semi-circular pool as well as an in-house ski shop, which can outfit guests with wardrobe staples as well as gear for hitting the slopes. As with other Sibuet properties, Le Lodge Park guests are welcome to book a meal at L’Alpage, the family’s mountainside refuge.

Note: Le Lodge Park is only open in the summer and winter.

Le M de Megève

Built as a three-star hotel in the 1980s, the property that is now Le M de Megève underwent a massive renovation in 2014, which resulted in a dramatic—and effective—rebranding. The overhaul included expanding the lobby area to include cozy fireplace-centered nooks, an excellent bistro restaurantand floor-to-ceiling picture windows that look out onto a courtyard. The clientele is a great mix of couples and families, but does tend to appeal most to a younger crowd, as there is always a fun, buzzy scene going on in the lobby.

Forty-two rooms (including 25 suites) are outfitted with pine wood–paneled walls, orange and gray Arpin bed covers and leather headboards. The look is masculine, stylish and cozy. Rooms are not huge, so for those who like to spread out, we recommend booking a junior suite or higher room category. The duplex suites are a fun option for families, as kids will love having their beds on a separate floor, under the eaves.

The all-day dining M’s Bistro, located in the lobby, has pale gray wool upholstered banquettes and serves French alpine comfort food like cheese and charcuterie platters. The gastronomic M’s Dining Room is open only for dinner and has a set menu presented in a Moleskin notebook, and diners are encouraged to sketch their experiences in the remaining blank pages.

There is a small but lovely spa with an indoor pool, Jacuzzi, gym, sauna and hammam. Treatments utilize Cinq Mondes products, and the après-ski massage is a specialty.

Les Fermes de Marie

The Sibuet family hotels are the best in Megève, and Les Fermes de Marie is the oldest, grandest and largest. Its 71 guestrooms spread throughout eight antique chalets are warm and stylish, boasting a down-to-earth yet world-class vibe. Les Fermes de Marie is the kind of family-friendly and totally comforting property that makes guests feel like they’re staying in a private chalet and their fellow guests are just close friends they’ve yet to make.

In 1989, nine separate mountainside chalets were taken apart, documented, transported to Megève and rebuilt to house the hotel’s restaurants, spa and gorgeous guest rooms. Anyone who experiences the hotel will agree: the old wood tells a story of its past, holding together Megève’s most beloved hotel and before that, family farmhouses. That the rooms today house movie stars and chic Parisians cuddled under opulent fur throws is appropriate.

The hotel has two refined restaurants, Traditionnel, which serves old-fashioned, formal cuisine from the region, and the downstairs Restaurant Alpin, specializing in fondue, charcuterie plates and dessert treats like tarte aux myrtilles (blueberry tart). The rambling, comfortable lobby bar is a great spot for après ski and for coffee and snacks throughout day and night.

The subterranean Spa Pure Altitude, consisting of 17 treatment rooms, an indoor pool, sauna, hammam and gym, specializes in handling ailments or issues caused by high altitude. The spa utilizes alpine plants and extracts in the products it makes in-house.

Two chalets managed by the hotel are available for rent. Chalet des Fermes, located on the property, can sleep 10 people in its five double rooms, and boasts a great lounge, dining room and terrace with stunning views. Chalet Chatel is not in the Fermes de Marie area, but in the small village of Les Choxeaux. It too has five bedrooms and comfortable public spaces, ideal for a large family or group of friends traveling together.

Unlike many properties in Megève, Les Fermes de Marie is open year-round.
