The Utah Beach Landing Museum is further south along the coast than the other sites, but it is a must-see for a few reasons. Architect and designer Nicolas Kelemen, wanted to emulate the experience of visiting Ellis Island when he dreamed up the layout and presentation of its 12,000 artifacts.
Visiting the museum allows guests to connect with history through individuals who witnessed the events, by hearing their stories, seeing their belongings and reliving memories. The owners, directors and guides are passionate about intriguing younger generations of visitors and think outside of the box to accomplish that goal. The movie shown on the museum’s second floor entitled, “Victory in the Sand,’ which was awarded a CINE Eagle Award and Special Jury Prize, explains why the landing at Utah Beach was comparatively more successful than the others.
For those visiting with younger kids, contact Indagare to learn about the family treasure hunts the museum offers and to set up VIP tours that include climbing into the B-26 ‘Marauder’ housed in a 1940’s style hanger.
Indagare Tip: The fact that the presentation of the museum is well done does not mean visiting and trying to absorb the material is easily done. Start your visit with the movie for a helpful overview of the event, then weave your way through the exhibit starting on the first floor.
