The City of Light was thrust into a period of darkness on January 7, 2015, when masked assailants attacked the offices of magazine Charlie Hebdo, and subsequently murdered 17 people. Like New York City, which has also suffered more than its share, Paris belongs not just to its country, but to the world. Anyone who has visited the French capital (and many who have yet to) share a collective adoration for the city that has created so much, and our love and thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of the victims and to all Parisians.
The city endures, as does our adoration of it—in fact, it grows stronger. Paris continues to be a beacon of love, inspiring grand acts of romance, inspiration, and, yes, forgiveness.
Through the trauma, Paris perseveres, and as always, celebrates beauty. As reported by our Paris-based contributor, there is lots of news to explore on your next trip: the philharmonic has a stunning new home, the Fondation Vuitton continues to awe and the Musée Picasso has reopened after a lengthy renovation. There are excellent new restaurants, including Clover, from master toque Jean-François Piège, and Victoria 1836, a hot spot with views of the Arc de Triomphe. Excellent new shopping options include the jewel box–like boutique from Olympia Le-Tan, and an assortment of chocolaterie including Comptoir le Chocolat, Jean-Paul Hévin Chocolate Bar(re), Henri Le Roux and Edwart.
Located in the 8th Arrondissement, the Jacques Garcia–designed La Réserve Paris is the latest boutique property on our radar, and it is already adored by initial guests. Housed in a Haussmannian mansion, the newcomer has just 40 rooms (26 of which are suites) and delivers understated elegance in traditional Belle Époque style. On-site amenities include an indoor pool, spa and seasonal French restaurant, helmed by the former chef of the Michelin-starred, local favorite Senderens. "Truly great service in a chic ambiance with killer views!" exclaimed one of our discerning members, a glamorous interior designer who stayed during Maison & Objet. 3 Avenue d'Eylau; 33-1-53-70-53-70; www.lareserve-paris.com
