Review

It’s obvious that the creators of Le Grand Pigalle come from a bar background. This hip boutique hotel is indeed a brainchild of the three young Parisians who first made their mark on Paris in 2007 when they opened Experimental Cocktail Club**,**a speakeasy-style bar near Les Halles. The ECC team has taken their winning formula across Paris, opening restaurants and bars on both sides of the Seine while also expanding to London (Joyeux Bordel) Ibiza (Experimental Beach) and New York (Experimental Cocktail Club – reopening soon, Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels.)

The heart and soul of the 37-room hotel—which refers to itself cheekily as a B&B (for bed and beverage)—is cocktail culture. From the martini glass motif on the hallway carpeting and toiletries disguised as mini liquor bottles, to pre-mixed artisanal cocktails in the mini-bar and a dedicated room-service line for ordering drinks (should your mini-bar run out), serious consideration has been given to how to create a hotel that has the convivial spirit of a great neighborhood bar. Capturing this quintessence rather perfectly, the chic lobby/bar/restaurant/lounge, which has floor-to-ceiling windows that open out onto rue Victor-Massé, is elegant, comfortable and fun. Here hotel guests and neighborhood hipsters eat, drink, work, read and flirt in comfort and style. The space morphs effortlessly from a breakfast café to a smart lunch spot for creative types and later, to a romantic cocktail bar. At the end of the night, you’ll feel lucky your bed—and a night cap—is just upstairs.

Many original details from the hotel’s classic French building remain, including moldings, fire places and iron stair case balustrades, and these are enhanced by a comfortable and chic combination of vintage-style and modern furniture. Geometric wallpaper with gold accents in the rooms provides a graphic backdrop for brass wall sconces and white satin linens. Some rooms have small terraces, but for the full Pigalle experience, book a room with a view of Sacre Coeur.

Who Should Stay

Those who want to explore Paris’s latest “it” neighborhood, can do no better than the Grande Pigalle. Located in the center of SoPi (South Pigalle), the hotel’s relaxed vibe and hip aesthetic create the perfect home base for a weekend of checking out the area’s chic bars, trendy restaurants and smart boutiques.
