The Big Fashion News in Paris this Spring: Dior’s Flagship Reopens

The big news for fashion lovers visiting Paris is the reopening of the 100,000-square-foot Dior flagship at 30 Avenue Montaigne, where Christian Dior started the brand in the 1950s. It now encompasses everything from haute couture salons and high-jewelry workshops to showrooms for housewares and children’s clothing—and even one special guest suite. But the biggest thrill for visitors is the adjacent Galerie Dior, which is a museum focused on the history of Dior—and by extension, the last 70 years of French fashion.

The Galerie, really a museum, was inspired by the blockbuster exhibit at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in 2017, but even for those who were treated to seeing that blockbuster exhibition or the derivative shows at the V&A in London or the Brooklyn Museum, you should still book tickets for a visit. It is a variation on those but has extra perks, such as a chance to set foot in the actual office of Monsieur Dior and get a peek into the dress workshops—left exactly as they were when he died. It is a must-visit for anyone who loves fashion.

The building also houses a café, Pâtisserie Dior, and a restaurant, Monsieur Dior, which offers some of his favorite French comfort foods with a modern twist—served, of course, on stunning Dior plates. For the truly Dior-obsessed, it is now also possible to rent the one suite in 30 Avenue Montaigne, which is on a floor above the haute couture salons. Like the rest of the interiors on the premises, these have been designed by American architect Peter Marino, so the craftsmanship is exquisite, from the carpeting and the bedroom walls, featuring more than 20 layers of custom paint, to the custom Dior hangers. There’s a living room and small dining room, so guests can be invited for dinner; more than a half dozen butlers remain on call 24/7. Because while the suite does have views of Avenue Montaigne and the interior gardens, even into the workshops, the major draw here is that the entire building is available around the clock, in case one wants to shop, dine or browse the exhibits in La Galerie at midnight in pajamas—Dior, of course.
