Review

Set in the hills outside Aix’s center, this is the area’s best-known hotel. Housed in a honey-colored mansion that dates from the 18th century and sits on a seven-acre property, Villa Gallici has just twenty-two individually decorated rooms and suites. When it opened in 1994—transformed by a trio of chic decorators—it immediately garnered rave reviews for the inspired interiors that reflect the city’s aristocratic past in such details as antique furniture, beautifully chosen fabrics and original artwork. Fortunately, nothing has changed. All rooms are decked out in 18th-century Frey and Souleiado fabrics. Room number six is one of the smallest on property, but it boasts a little balcony and lovely views of Aix.

The property, part of the Relais & Châteaux portfolio, has a lovely terrace, a cypress-lined path, a pool, and guests feel like they are hiding away in a secret garden. Chef Christophe Gavot whips up flavorful Provencal classics like scallop ravioli, lamb in a crust of salt with rosemary and fennel and a decadent soft chocolate cake with raspberries.
