Review
Opened in 1897, the Fairmont is one of Hamburg’s oldest luxury hotels and boasts a long and storied history as the city’s grande dame. The massive white building with a mint green copper roof commands an enviable position on the Binnenalster, just steps from the city’s top shopping and attractions. Entering the lobby is akin to stepping back in time, with marble floors, rich velvet upholstery, gilded accents and walnut wood columns.
The opulent, old-world design extends to the 157 rooms and suites, with brocade bedspreads, velvet headboards, heavy drapes and glittering chandeliers, but bathrooms are spacious and modern. Front facing rooms overlook the lakefront and have views of the Alster fountain and city hall.
The hotel has multiple dining outlets. The flagship is the grand Restaurant Haerlin with two Michelin stars and a luxurious décor of pastel silks, glittering chandeliers and a wall of windows overlooking the lake. There is also an Art Deco—style grill with German and Nordic cuisine as well as a trendy Japanese-Peruvian restaurant, plus multiple bars and lounges and the luxurious lobby for afternoon tea. The property also houses a fitness center and spa.
