Review

Designed by Jan Störmer, a prolific local architect, and opening in the fall of 2017, The Fontenay is Hamburg’s newest luxury property in 18 years.  The sleekly designed hotel imitates the symbol of an infinity sign, with rounded edges and a free flowing, open layout. The soaring lobby is decorated in a neutral color palette with shimmering light fixtures and opens onto two leafy courtyards. The property is set about a 5-10 minute drive from the city center, but is also accessible by a leisurely walk along the lake.

The 130 rooms and suites all boast balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors, spacious bathrooms and warm, beige hues. The hotel takes advantage of its idyllic setting and each of rooms overlook eitherthe leafy residential neighborhood or the picturesque Lake Alster. The sophisticated rooms are chic with crisp bedspreads, natural furnishings and massive, all-white bathrooms.

The property is crowned by the rooftop restaurant, helmed by a Michelin-starred chef who highlights local flavors with distinct French and Nordic influences. Just below the restaurant is a circular shaped bar with an expansive deck that offers 180-degree views of the lake. A more casual and contemporary lobby restaurant opens out onto the garden on the first floor for light bites and apertifs.

The Fontenay’s grand spa, fitness center and rooftop pool help contribute to the feel of a resort within a city. The sprawling indoor/outdoor infinity pool peers out over the lake as does the glass-enclosed gym and sophisticated spa.

Who Should Stay

Couples and families who want to stay at Hamburg’s newest luxury property with a prime lakefront position and don’t mind being removed from the main sites.
