Munich’s grande dame got only some of the details right in the recent renovation, but remains one of the city’s most beloved institutions.

  • Lobby lounge beneath a massive, stained glass skylight.
  • Longtime staff Review The lobby of the Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski, beneath a large rotunda with a beautiful stained-glass skylight, has been called “Munich’s most beautiful living room,” and indeed there the locals who treat the lounge there as just that: a place to meet, schmooze, see and be seen. It’s like the Plaza used to be before the renovation added the tourist/train station feel. With 300 rooms (including 64 suites) occupying two buildings and spanning six floors, the property feels large and bustling. All the rooms have been renovated (the updates were complete in late 2012), and now feature a mix of old and new (the property calls the style “trendition”). Philippe Starck Lucite chairs stand side-by-side with antique desks; large round mirrors are set in massive gilded frames; some rooms feature flatscreen televisions installed in the center of a large pole, allowing the device to rotate 360 degrees. The wallpapers throughout feature bold prints of masterpieces from the nearby Neue Pinakothek. One wishes the updates had re-envisioned the somewhat drab carpeting which casts a dated air across even the newest rooms. There’s a shallow pool on the top floor with great city views, an exercise room and a small spa that offers treatments based around the Vier Jahreszeiten (four seasons). The hotel is located right on Maximilianstrasse, Munich’s haute fashion street, and most museums, major sightseeing destinations and many recommended restaurants are easily reached on foot.
