King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Not only is the King George located next door to the legendary Grande Bretagne on Syntagma Square, it is now owned by the same hotel group. The truth is you can't really go wrong at either property but what gives the King George a bit of an edge is that it went through major renovations in 2013; its 102 rooms have just the right touch of Old World elegance (parquet wooden floors, sweeping curtains and chandeliers) but are soundproofed and updated. Its Royal Penthouse Suite is often on the lists of the most luxurious suites in the world; it takes up the entire 9th floor and boasts its own terrace and pool with stunning views the Parthenon. And while it might not have a spa on par to that of the Grande Bretagne, guests of the King George are allowed to use it. Many also appreciate the more intimate size of the property compared to its much larger sister which can be thronged with cruise ship crowds.

Bedroom at New Hotel, Athens, Greece

New Hotel

Owned by the world renowned art collector Dakis Joannou and smartly designed by the quirky Brazilian design firm Campana brothers, the New Hotel is the city’s coolest upscale design property, with 79 rooms (including 7 suites) and an intimate restaurant, which on Sundays hosts the city's buzziest brunch scene. Although centrally located, just a five-minute walk to Syntagma Square, the hotel is tucked back in a Modernist building on a side street so it feels hidden and discreet. The interiors are both playful and smart; the Campana brothers created much of the interiors with items recycled from the previous hotel. Think puzzle-like walls and chairs constructed of layered repurposed wood mixed with sculptural chairs of their own design. Worth the splurge: the 650-square-foot Penthouse Suite with 360-degree city views, a sprawling private terrace and a window framing the Acropolis directly over the bed. Although the windows are soundproofed, it helps to book a room on the 5th or 6th floors, which are less noisy.

There are not many public spaces to speak of except for a small workout room and spa below the lobby, but the hotel's small dining room is both cozy and cool with a menu that offers a mix of international upscale comfort food. On Sunday it attracts many of the city's creative locals who come for the excellent brunch spread—fresh baked bread and pastries—and the buzzy crowd.

Periscope

Located in the peaceful residential neighborhood of Kolonaki, Periscope Hotel allows travelers to live like a local Athenian. The tourist hub of Plaka and Parliament Square is only a 15-minute walk away, but the hotel feels worlds apart. Here, you don’t need to worry about bumping into passengers filing off tour buses or cruise ships. In the evenings, Kolonaki resembles Manhattan’s Upper East Side, with relaxed but refined restaurants populated by well-dressed locals and quiet streets lit by lamplight.

Periscope occupies a narrow building on a small side street. Its nondescript entrance reveals stylish interiors with teal velvet columns and sectionals, overstuffed white lounge chairs, black iron tables and stools with hairpin legs. Periscope is part of Design Hotels, a collection of boutique hotels that are design-driven (sometimes to a fault). While Periscope’s 22 rooms are mostly standard and comfortable with a minimalist, monochromatic aesthetic, the hotel’s signature offering, the Penthouse Suite, may place too much emphasis on form over function. (At 700 square feet, the toilet and shower fit behind the same glass door, making for an inefficient bathroom layout.) Despite these drawbacks, the penthouse offers one of the best values in all of Athens. For the price of an entry-level room at the Four Seasons Astir Palace, for example, guests at Periscope can stay in a duplex suite with a rooftop hot tub and a view of the Parthenon.

There are no guest facilities, but the hotel does offer a complimentary buffet of refreshments available all day. Guests can snack on cakes, sandwiches, nuts and other treats while enjoying the stylish lobby, which serves as the only common space in this tiny boutique hotel.

Bar at Salon de Bricolage, Athens, Greece

Salon de Bricolage

When Salon de Bricolage, Athens's first exclusive membership club opened in the middle of the Greek economic crisis, at first the owners, the entrepreneurial brothers Chrysanthos and Spyros Panos, got some flack. “Some people complained it was inappropriate,” said Chrysanthos. “But we conceived of Salon de Bricolage as a dynamic meeting place for the city's creatives. It's been such a success that now those people who initially protested the club are asking for membership.” Located within a townhouse in the city's posh neighborhood of Kolonaki, there are three floors; the first floor houses a narrow brick-walled lounge and gallery space with a bar; the second floor contains a lounge and more formal restaurant (the chef here is great with fish dishes and sushi) with about a dozen tables; and the third floor has six bedrooms. Normally for members only, the bedrooms are available to Indagare members at a preferred rate.

Opening Months

The Salon de Bricolage opens at the end of September and closes at Easter.
