With roots going back to the Neolithic age, Athens in classical times was a breeding ground for ideas that shaped Western civilization. Today, the city that has been regarded as little more than a stopover destination for decades is undergoing a renaissance in which its storied past is blending with a contemporary scene.

    2-3 Days: Essential Athens

In Athens, Indagare can arrange activities like a scavenger hunt, a food tour, a boat trip or a classical Greek meal re-created using ancient recipes. Here is just one example of what our destination experts can create for you.

    • Day 1

After arriving in Athens, settle into your hotel before meeting your private guide who will also take you through the Acropolis and provide context about the advancements of democracy, science, philosophy and art that flourished during its creation. Then you will see more iconic sights like the Parthenon, Hephaisteion temple, Hadrian’s Library and the Roman Agora, as well as the uber-modern Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, which is housed in a stunning, Renzo Piano–designed building.

    • Day 2

To complement the history lesson from day one, spend day two exploring Athens’s blossoming cultural scene. Begin with a tour of Monastiraki, one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods, filled with trendy boutiques and restaurants and cool street art. After popping into some shops, begin a food tour of the neighborhood, stopping at “underground” restaurants and bars that you would not be able to find without an in-the-know guide.

    • Day 3

Enjoy your last morning either at leisure or making a return visit to a favorite museum from day one. Then, pack up and depart for your next destination.

“Our tour guide in Athens was charming, knowledgeable and passionate about archaeology and Greece's ruins.”

“On the drive from Athens to Amanzoe, we stopped at the ruins of Mycenae. From the hilltop, I saw fields and olive groves that stretched beyond the horizon, and it was so still I could hear my heart beating in my ears.”

“Despite how familiar I am with Greece, I could still go every summer and visit a new place if I wanted to. In Athens, dinner at Papadakis is a must.”
