Review

Thanks to its central location and legendary reputation, the Grande Bretagne has long been the hotel of choice for the city’s visiting dignitaries—from Bill Clinton to the King of Spain. Built in 1874, Hotel Grande Bretagne is the first ever five-star luxury hotel to open in Athens, combining the rich history of Greece and the social life of the capital city. Once the headquarters of the Greek Army during the early years of WWII, the hotel also hosted the members of the first IOC during the Modern Olympic Games in 1896.

It’s 19th century neo-classical facade opens up to an expansive Beaux-Arts lobby richly appointed with Persian rugs, bold mosaics and potted plants. Guests are greeted at the Reception Desk by a significant 18th Century French painting of the Abduction of Persephone, among many other treasures throughout the property (each week a “museum tour” of the hotel is available for guests to be guided through the myriad of antiques and art masterpieces).

In a country known for its grandeur, the 320 guest rooms and suites are decorated to match with chandeliers, thick brocade curtains and marble bathrooms. Deluxe Room Acropolis View is the bestselling room category with sweeping views of the Parthenon, Syntagma Square, Greek Parliament and National Gardens.

Note: Guests looking for more space should opt for the opulent Grand Suites or ultra-private two-bedroom Penthouse suite with a spacious terrace, breathtaking acropolis views and private pool. Plus, all suites come with a butler service.

For a hotel of this size, there is no shortage of food and beverage options for every occasion. For all-day dining, GB Roof Garden Restaurant serves Mediterranean alongside magnificent views of the Acropolis. Also on the rooftop, Bar 8 offers a selection of bar bites to accompany the extensive cocktail menu. Guests can indulge on authentic Greek cuisine poolside at GB Pool Bar & Grill. Wine lovers will be excited for the property’s one-of-a-kind Greek Wines Masterclass with Executive Sommelier, Mr. Evangelos Psofidis (one of the country’s best).

Who Should Stay

Travelers looking for elegant “old-world luxury” and high-touch service. Also, guests who don’t particularly like to tour or sightsee will enjoy viewing Athens’ highlights from the comfort of the roof (while enjoying the amenities and extensive food and beverage programs).
