At a Glance

A passion project for sister-duo Oana and Jasmin focused on design, art and sustainability, Aristide was created out of an abandoned Neoclassical palazzo, one of the last built in Greece. The property presides amongst the pastel-colored mansions of port city Ermoupoli on the island Syros, the buzzy yet comparatively untouristed capital of the Cyclades. Hotel Aristide acts as an intimate private residence—upon entry, guests are met with a soothing green color palette accented by maroon and gold furnishings in the lobby, which leads a serene courtyard shrouded in greenery.

Aristide Hotel Review

Hotel Aristide opened in 2020 on the historic, under-the-radar Greek island of Syros (the capital of the Cyclades) inside one of the last Neoclassical mansions built in Greece. Distanced from the busy port, the property is well-located in the town of Ermoupoli, the heart of the island. The Neoclassical mansion is a landmark building in the Vaporia district, the most picturesque and affluent neighborhood in Ermoupolis where aesthetes admire the beautiful marble arches and architectural details throughout the quarter. Outside its grand front doors is an elegant marble-clad avenue, alleys lined with pastel-colored homes and chic boutique shops, with the historic and magical village of Ano Syros right up the hill.

Upon entering through the stately wooden doorway, guests are greeted by a checkered-marble floor and Doric columns, the ultimate grand entrance. The kind and calm nature of the staff sets the tone for your stay—luxurious but not pretentious; relaxed but refined. The warm green of the lobby walls is complimented by Art Deco and contemporary furnishings, like modern gold light fixtures and a maroon velvet couch.

Each of the property’s nine suites have their own unique flare, but all have warm pops of color, contemporary lighting fixtures and Aegean Beauty bath products (a brand that uses locally sourced ingredients). Artwork adorns the walls from both resident artists and the owners’ permanent collection, with original works by artists such as Christy Lee Rogers, Igor Skaletsky, and Riccardo Vecchio. The comfortable and stylish suites range in amenities: some have private outdoor areas and plunge pools, and others have free-standing tubs and balconies. The walls are a bit thin, so we recommend requesting the upper level as opposed to the suites next to the lobby area.

There are multiple spaces within the hotel for guests to enjoy meals or a glass of Greek wine, including the shaded outdoor garden, where breakfast is served. Using their own vegetable and fruit garden, Hotel Aristide is able to offer guests a seasonal menu that pays homage to traditional Cycladic recipes, like Tirititim eggs (a Greek vegetable omelet) and caper preserve. (All meals on property are crafted from organic and local ingredients and Hotel Aristide has composting system for leftovers.) The outdoor garden evokes the sense of a morning in your own backyard—while open to outside guests, it is tucked away and surrounded by greenery which blocks out the surroundings. Open all day for coffee and drinks, the garden bar adjacent to the outdoor garden is a hip spot to sit on a barstool and order a classic cocktail. Award-winning bartender Christos Gkolfis can walk guests through the wine list dotted with underrated Greek wines.

Guests can enjoy sunset drinks on the rooftop, in the comfort of Honoré’s vintage Croisette armchairs (dubbed the most comfortable in the world). The rooftop offers views over the Aegean Sea and a daily-changing menu of Cycladic cuisine by Chef Petros Braikidis and Pastry Chef Angelo’s Tsilis. Guests may order a set menu for two, or go for à la carte, where light dishes like blue crab tartare balance out a delicious and hearty seafood with orzo pasta. The ambience is rather intimate; after the sun sets, the only lighting comes from the small lamps at each table. Make sure to try the local San Michali cheese, only made in Syros.
