A combination of three townhouses on St. Stephen’s Green, The Shelbourne is as much an institution in Ireland as a pint of Guinness. Heavy tapestry above a grand fireplace at the lobby, intricate molding, glass chandeliers and marble floors all around paint a picture of classic luxury that has been the setting of so much: The 265-room hotel opened in 1824 and has since been the site of the 1922 signing of the Irish constitution (this was in Room 112 which is available for guests to view), and everyone from Michelle Obama and Charlize Theron to Princess Grace has slept here.

The Shelbourne’s historic blueprint with 190 years under its belt has unfortunately created a disparity in room sizes and entry-level units are quite small. But regardless of size, each of the 265 private chambers are wonderfully outfitted in style with plush dramatic curtains, artworks from Irish masters, marble bathrooms and Elemis amenities. Its location overlooking St. Stephen’s Green offers rooms facing emerald-green views, but because that street is a major city thoroughfare, guests in those rooms do encounter noise. Rooms in the back sacrifice views in favor of quiet. Be sure to request the Heritage Rooms and suites, as they have been recently refreshed by Guy Oliver, who oversaw renovations at the The Connaught and Claridge’s.

Once you branch out of your private chambers, the property’s grand reputation will unfold before your eyes. The intimate yet glamorous Horseshoe Bar is a popular destination for high-powered businessmen and politicians, who gather for after-office drinks; The Lord Mayor Lounge’s renowned afternoon tea is great for people-watching, especially for ladies lunching; The Saddle Room is among the best places in town to indulge on a juicy piece of steak; and No. 27 a hangout for just about everyone in Dublin.

The day spa, which was added to the property in 2012, has become one of Dublin’s most sought-after for relaxation and cleansing. The range of treatments is vast, from firming facials and exotic Thai herbal massages to specific services for mothers-to-be. One of the spa’s signature indulgences is the Champagne and caviar full-body treatment, where for two-and-a-half hours, guests are treated to the most extravagant pampering rituals, starting with—what else—a glass of Champagne to set the mood.
