Review

Perched above a wide expanse of beach lapped by the Irish Sea, the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links boast one of the most scenic locations in Ireland, as well as easy proximity to Dublin’s city center and airport. Once the home of the prominent Jameson family, the hotel has maintained the original mansion, now part of the atmospheric Jameson Bar, and fused it with an additional building via a glass-enclosed foyer. The resort lobby is airy and light-filled, decorated in hues of light silver, pale blue and sea green, and boasting whimsical chandeliers. The lobby bar has a curved glass wall that offers breathtaking views of the sea and islands in the distance.

The 134 rooms all have floor-to-ceiling windows and terraces, and many boast views of the sea or beachfront golf course. Décor is neutral and breezy, with the focus placed on the spectacular setting.

The hotel’s 1780 restaurant is sleek yet cozy and serves contemporary Irish cuisine throughout the day, as well as a bountiful breakfast buffet each morning. After a round of golf or beach walk, guests congregate in the cozy Jameson Bar, a sophisticated take on the traditional Irish pub, which is decorated with plaid wallpaper and oversized leather armchairs. Here, a range of Irish whiskies can be sampled, and live music adds to the convivial setting.

The property’s 18-hole golf course sits along the beach dunes and is renowned as one of the best in the country. The hotel also houses a small spa and gym. For those who want to explore the surrounding area, Dublin is just a 25-minute drive away and even closer, the coastal village of Malahide and the grand Malahide Castle are worth visiting.

Who Should Stay

Golfers and those who want a seaside experience near Dublin. The hotel is only 15 minutes from the airport, making it a great overnight at the beginning or end of an Ireland trip.
