Review

Dating back to the 17th century, Dromoland Castle is a grand fortress of turrets and towers set beside a scenic lake. The interiors evoke royal grandeur with brocade curtains, thick carpets and beautiful woodwork.

The 97 rooms are located in both the original castle as well as annexes connected to the building. The rooms have all been recently renovated, but the best accommodations are the gorgeous staterooms in the main castle. With high ceilings and a delicate color palette, these suites overlook the undulating grounds and lake. Bathrooms have marble and local stone elements, and some boast deep soaking tubs.

Dinner is served either in the gilded dining room, the aptly named Earl of Thomond, which offers direct views onto Lake Dromoland or the more relaxed Fig Tree Restaurant at the castle’s golf club. Don’t miss the sumptuous afternoon tea service, with tiers of delectable sweet and savory treats.

Guests can partake in the many activities available on property, such as falconry, archery, horseback riding, canoeing on the lake and treatments at the spa. The castle is opulent, but the vibe is decidedly intimate and family-friendly. The convenient location—only 15 minutes from Shannon airport—makes it a gracious beginning or end to a western Ireland trip.
