Spotlight: Ashford Castle

Anything born in 1228 that is still standing today is certain to have lived many lives, and the five-star hotel Ashford Castle is no exception. Located near the small town of Cong and on the banks of Lough Corrib (the second largest lough, or lake, in the country), the castle had its not-so-humble origins as an invading Norman family’s stronghold. More than 400 years later, it changed hands and became Ashford Estate with the addition of a French-style Chateau to the property. When Ashford found itself in a state of disrepair over a century later, one of Ireland’s favorite families, the Guinesses, picked up the property and ushered Ashford into its current state of opulence by adding two Victorian-style extensions, planting one million trees and rebuilding the entire property in a Baronial style using local stone. Today, Ashford Castle is one of the most unique properties in Ireland, offering luxury accommodations, a comprehensive spa and an abundance of activities. Plus, after two years of renovations, the hotel recently reopened and boasts a fresh aesthetic that makes it one of Ireland’s top luxury retreats.Contact Indagare for assistance planning a trip to Ashford Castle.
