Review

Ischia itself offers the same romantic beauty, delicious food and wine and cerulean blue waters that can be found on the Amalfi Coast and nearby Capri, without the crowds of scene-seeking tourists. And on its northwest corner, Mezzatorre is a stylish spot to soak in the island's natural thermal hot springs.

A hotspot in the 1970s, the terracotta-hued Mezzatorre is built on the ruins of a 16th-century watchtower, and resembles a fanciful castle overlooking San Montano Bay from its perch amid 17 acres of pine wood forests. It reopened in 2019 after an extensive renovation spearheaded by Il Pellicano's Marie-Louise Sciò, and has quickly earned a cult status on par with its disco days. The resort's 57 white-walled rooms and suites have pops of emerald greens, fuchsias and blues, and make for a refreshing, restive home after a day on the wood-decked pool, along the curved stone terraces, or out in the bay itself. (Guests can go on multiple boating adventures, including to nearby underwater canyons where dolphins congregate at sunset.)

During their stay, guests have unlimited access (though reservations are required) to the spa's balneotherapy circuit, with waters that specifically benefit respiration and arthritis, a Thalasso seawater pool and Kniepp therapy. And while exploring Ischia is one of the appeals of staying here, Mezzatorre is enchanting enough that some guests don't leave its coastal cocoon during their entire stay.

Who Should Stay

Anyone visiting Ischia looking for a pampering, but unfussy, escape. Families with older children will also be happy here.
