Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Stepping into the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, on the western shore of Lake Como, you are immediately enveloped in an atmosphere of soaring ceilings, golden brocades, gilt-framed paintings and herringbone hardwood floors. The bold color combinations—the sitting room juxtaposes salmon-hued sofas with apple-green armchairs—feel appropriate, albeit a bit over-the-top, to a region long known for manufacturing silk scarves. The views of the vast lake and mountains are the centerpiece of any Lake Como hotel, and the Tremezzo is no different. Breakfast is served at La Terrazza, which features a wall of windows overlooking the sparking silver water; lunch is enjoyed alfresco on the terrace under bright orange awnings; and idle time in the afternoon can be spent leisurely at the fun beach club and pool which floats on a barge in the lake (Note: Guests have to cross a busy road to access both).

Tremezzo has 84 rooms and suites, which are decorated in a more traditional décor, with jewel-toned fabrics, antique burled writing desks and damask curtains. In 2012, the hotel completed a multi-million-dollar overhaul of the top floor, creating rooftop suites with a more modern aesthetic, marble bathrooms, terraces with sweeping lake views (some have Jacuzzis) and butler service.

For such a small property, Tremezzo has a wealth of amenities complimented by warm and friendly service. There’s an Espa with five treatments rooms and a hammam, tennis courts, three pools (including an indoor infinity lap pool) and a strong focus on food, with a good formal restaurant (the saffron risotto is a must), a wood-fired pizza oven in the garden and a cozy fondue and wine bar. The hotel also has a stunning garden that used to be a part of the nearby Villa Carlotta.
