Review

Located in the charming village of Torno, just over an hour’s drive from Milan and Malpensa Airport, Il Sereno joined the ranks of Lake Como's most storied hotels when it opened in 2016. The sister property of St. Barths’ Le Sereno brings a new aesthetic to the area, one that is primarily known for a series of old-world hotels like the iconic, traditional Villa d’Este. The conception of celebrated design darling Patricia Urquiola, Il Sereno eschews ornamental design details in favor of a sleek aesthetic that highlights stone, steel and expanses of glass.

The hotel boasts 30 rooms and suites, which range in size but all feature generous terraces overlooking the lake. The accommodations are furnished in a spare, contemporary aesthetic and are comfortable, if perhaps not overly luxurious. The bathrooms have beautiful walk-in rain showers.

On-site amenities include a full-service spa, also designed by Patrica Urquiola, which is housed in a former boathouse. The now-ultramodern facility offers a sauna, steam room and full roster of spa services (facials, massages, hair treatments), all of which use Valmont products. Il Sereno also has two classic boats, one of which comes with a captain and the other of which is available for guests to take out on their own. Alternatively, there is a public dock a 10-minute walk from the hotel where travelers can access the larger tour boats that circumnavigate the lake and stop at charming towns and villages including Como, Cernobbio and Vernazzo. Other activities available at or near the hotel are swimming in the 60-foot heated pool, hiking along the surrounding hilly trails and playing golf.

Who Should Stay

Young, hip travelers who prefer a contemporary design aesthetic that would not be out of place on St Barth's or Miami Beach, as well as those who desire a small boutique hotel on one of the quietest stretches of Lake Como.
